Happy Dunking in 2012!

Hard to believe but 2012 is already here! And that means my 40th birthday is just a few days away (Sat, Jan 7th). The last couple of weeks have gone really well with my vertical jump training. The holidays have been awesome spending time with my family and also having some extra time to train and make sure I get all my workouts in.

I mentioned in my last post that Jacob Hiller (creator of Jump Manual) helped customize a new workout for me. I LOVE IT. On Saturday, he had me add another new exercise and I'm SUPER EXCITED about it. The gains have slowed down for me these last couple of months and I really believe this new workout and especially this new exercise is going to help me get a few more inches on my vert. I will tell you more about it in a future post so make sure to come back and visit!

I played hoops this morning. Jumping felt so easy almost like I didn't even have to try. It might have been the highest I've jumped off two feet since I started my training back in April so felt really good.

I will upload a video on Friday or Saturday for sure showing where I'm at in my pursuit of the two hand tomahawk dunk. That's all I want for my birthday this year! :-)

Thanks for reading and check back this weekend for hopefully good news!

  3. @ Vik - Thanks for the comments!

I definitely agree dropping weight will help you. Nearly every person I've ever known who could really jump was also really lean. So definitely get your diet right and drop that weight. I think you will be surprised how much better your knee feels too not having to support the extra weight.

I would recommend getting the Jump Manual to help with your vertical jump training.

If that isn't possible, start with doing squats, deadlifts, and jump rope. If you haven't lifted weights before, make sure you have someone who knows what they are doing to help you learn proper technique for those lifts. Very important you are doing them correctly.

    Good luck!

  4. Dude, I am starting Jump Manual within the next week or so. I have one question I am hoping you could help me with.

On the Explosion Squats, Jacob describes: "When your knees reach your chest EXPLODE back to a starting position with the intensity of a jump". When he says "with the intensity of a jump", does that mean that I should push the weight up as fast as if I was jumping?
Because he also says that I should not be able to do more than 8 reps, and with that amount of weight I have trouble exploding as fast as a jump.
    Any ideas? :P

Anyways, keep up your good work. It has been inspirational watching your progress. Good luck on your tomahawk man. Thanks.

  5. Thanks for a fast response and i had one question can lifting weights like squating all that weight on my back effect height.kind of a dumb question its just that i talked to the doctor after i got my xrays this summer after surgery and he said i am going to be alittle bit taller than 6,6 and i dont want it to effect height. Your videos are mu motivation and your great

  6. @ Fisken - great question about the squats. The idea is you want to go down very slow and then explode back up really fast on those first 3 sets. You should have a pretty heavy weight so the reality is you won't be moving the weight that fast...but you should be TRYING to move the weight as fast as you can. Hope that helps.

Good luck with your training! Let me know how it goes!

  7. @ Vik - My personal opinion is lifting weights will have no negative impact on how tall you will be. The whole "lifting weights will stunt your growth" is a myth that based on everything I've read on the subject has never been proven scientifically. But, I'm not a doctor and you should talk with your parents and other people you trust.

Just make sure you lift with good technique. Start with light weights (or even body weight for doing squats) and get your technique down and then slowly add weight.

    Good luck man!

  9. Hi, I just finished week 2 of the Jump Manual and am going to test my jump again this weekend :) Your blog has been very inspirational, and I hope you can Tomahawk dunk before your birthday!
I was wondering if you could tell me what kind of exercises the Freak Jump Technique program has? Because I really need to work on my jump technique, though I surely can't spend another ~$70 for it. So I was just wondering if you could give me a general outline of what they teach you, I'd be very grateful.

Keep this blog going! Very motivational.
    Thanks in advance,

    Vignesh R.

  10. Thanks, Vignesh!

The Freak Jump Technique program has you work on your approach and take off primarily doing a few drills that help you get your form right.

Here are a few videos that Adam has on his youtube page that go over some of the things he teaches you and some of the drills you do as part of the training. Some great stuff here. Hope it helps!
