Operation Tomahawk - Week 4 Recap

I've completed another week of Operation Tomahawk towards my quest to throw down a two-hand tomahawk dunk before January when I turn 40.

Similar to last week, I missed a couple of workouts. And so here comes the part where I make some rather lame excuses! I'm coaching my son's AAU basketball team which just started and my work has been crazy busy so my time is even more limited than it has been in previous weeks. I'm really looking forward to the holidays when things calm down for a bit so I can really focus on my training leading up to my 40th birthday.

The good news is I got probably my best dunk so far this past Friday. I tossed the ball off the glass, caught it with one hand and threw down a one hand dunk. Similar to the one I got at the end of this video, but instead of rattling around the rim a bit, this one was completely clean and even with a bit of authority. It was on the 9'10" rim but I still am really proud of that dunk. The bad news is that my camera wasn't on! Someday I will learn my lesson to not make any dunk attempts unless the camera is rolling.

I did play hoops yesterday but never got the camera out to film and didn't make any dunk attempts. I will be playing again on Friday and will definitely film no matter how good or bad I'm jumping that day.

This week is off to a lousy start. I didn't workout yesterday (just played basketball) and didn't work out today. I have a huge project due tomorrow and has completely consumed me. Speaking of that project, I've got to get back to it.

Tomorrow, I'm getting up early and getting a great workout in. I hope to post again on Friday and have a video to share.

Thanks!

  1. Good job on that dunk! Too bad you didn't get it on camera :(

I am halting my training for this week as well since we had a game on sunday and another one tomorrow + practice on monday, to give my knee some rest. My left knee is not hurting, but it doesn't feel 100 %, so I'll see what happens. Don't feel like doing heavy squats with it now, especially now that I know I can't get a decent recovery period after exercises. But stuff like that happens, I'm sure you'll get back to your training soon as well!

  2. Thanks, Antti! Yes - I'm so bummed that wasn't filmed. It felt so good and the reactions I got from people who saw it made it pretty clear that it was my most impressive dunk so far.

You definitely have to be flexible with your training schedule knowing that things come up. I'm going camping this weekend and so will have to modify my big leg workout on Saturday doing mostly 1 leg squats and things like that as its unlikely I'll make it to the gym.

We just got to do the best we can!

  3. I struggle with time, too. Often, I remind myself that imperfect nutrition is better than no-effort-at-all nutrition and that some training is better than no training.

You're almost 40...I know you have a goal to tomahawk before then, but you might consider taking a long view. Your body is clearly capable of performance gains, which won't change on a magical day. So definitely try to reach your goal, but don't consider it a failure if you don't.

I work out after my son goes to sleep, which means 3 our of four days I work out at 8:30pm. It's hardly optimal, but it beats not working out. Saturdays are my plyo days and I get to do those during my son's naps. So you're in good company.

Frankly, I'm amazed your body recovers as quickly as it does. It's a testament to the kind of shape you're in. I'm 37. I've been doing jump manual for about 4 weeks and I'm a ton stronger than I was when I started (I'd never done resistance training), but when I test my vert, I test lower than I did when I started because recovery takes several days for me after my plyo/lowerbody workouts. At the same time, I'm not on a deadline and I plan on playing volleyball for many more years - years that I'll enjoy my new vertical when it happens.

  4. Thanks, Hauser. Your life completely changes when you have children for sure! I try to work with my 11 year old son on his basketball as much as possible and sometimes that means I skip my workout so I can help him. As much as it kills me, my glory days are gone but his are still ahead of him! :-) I've found that if I don't workout early in the morning it's really hard to get it in at night. So much going on.

Given that you haven't lifted weights before, you are going to see some amazing gains in your vertical from Jump Manual. One thing I didn't realize until not too long ago was how much strength plays into jumping. I always thought it was more to do with quickness and reaction time. Strength is HUGE! I'm excited for you man!
