Jump Manual at 40 years old - Week 6 Results

This past week of training using the Jump Manual was not my best. I skipped about 1/2 of the workouts. Just one of those weeks where I just could not find the motivation.

However, today I did my weekly no-step vertical test and am pleased to say that I got over 30 inches on three jumps! I got 30.8, 30.1, and 30.0. I'm now back to where my no-step vertical peaked about 6 months ago.

I've increased 3.2 inches during these 6 weeks (27.6 to 30.8). That puts me half way to my goal of 33 inches and I'm also half-way through this 12 week phase of training. Of course, these first 3 inches are much easier to obtain as I'm just gaining back what I already had achieved and now I've got to go past that. Won't be easy, but I'm going to do it!

Here's today's video!

    2. I havent even started the jump manual yet so I dont know how im making progress but I'll take it. I get shin splints too in my left leg, any tips on a cure for that? Good luck with your training!!

    3. i've had shin splints in high school and my coach would have me take my shoes and socks off and grab a towel with my toes and pull it off the floor. seemed to help. would also do ice and foam rolling.

  2. Hi Candyman!
    Great gains this week, eh?
If you can hang on the rim with both hands, how far would you say you are from dunking?
    Thanks

    1. if your grabbing the rim with 2 hands at the palms of your hands, you should be able to dunk 1 hand. if you're grabbing the rim with 2 hands more towards your knuckles then you probably have 2-3 inches to go.

a better test, is see if you can get one hand completely above the rim. if you can do that, you should be able to dunk one hand.

the catch is though being able to jump that high with the ball in your hands or be coordinated enough to throw a lob up and catch it.

  3. I would say 6"-8"from dunking with 2 hands. Candyman should know since he has been there before. How is your training Volleyballerdunk?

  4. Have you seen the new Nike Hyperdunk basketball shoes that are going to be released in a few days? They calculate your vertical and several other things by using an app on your phone. They seem pretty cool and I just thought I would share if you have not heard of them.

  5. I'm so glad you are getting your hops back. I was disconcerted by your previous blog post. I'm on week 5 of my training, although I should be on 6+. I've missed a few days, but it looks like I can still make progress despite this fact from blogs such as yours. I hope your each that 2-hand dunk. We are all rooting for you!

    1. not sure...been only testing my no-step vertical. at my peak i was around 35-36 inches so i should be close to that now.

    4. Hope your right. If I do every workout and also drink protein and creatine do you have a guess what my running vertical will be after 7 and 12 weeks? Right now it is 30-31" The reason I ask about 7 weeks is because that is when my birthday is. Good luck with your 2 hand dunk coming up!!!

    6. Im going to do my best. I did the first workout today and did 2 sets instead of 4 to ease my way into it because of my back. Next week I plan to do all the sets and reps. My friends keep telling me you may get to where you can dunk but in a game its going to be way harder blah blah blah... Hopefully I will be able to prove them wrong.

  7. @candyman I have a couple questions regarding the weight exercises. When it says go to complete failure on set 5 do you go until you can't do anymore or until you are not doing it with as much explosiveness? Also on the knee drives how do you do the 5 sets of those with weights? All I have is 10 pound ankle weights. Thanks man

    1. go to failure

I use a machine at the gym to do the knee drives. If you don't have that machine, then use the ankle weights.

    2. Ok thanks man. I actually did all the weight workouts on Thursday after not thinking I would.Pretty sore now!! Might actually have one of those machines at the gym, will have to look. Thanks again!

(sorry for late response) after resting for a week and re-testing, i have been able to dunk a volleyball on a 9'11" rim. How far would you say I am from dunking if i can dunk a volleyball on 10 feet? Candyman?
