Jump Manual at 40 years old - Week 12 Results

So another 12 weeks of Jump Manual is complete! Crazy how fast time goes by. I sure wish I was posting a video with some awesome 2 hand dunks but still not quite there. But, as I've said before...I'm not giving up! And, I'm actually more confident than ever that I'm going to get there. Maybe I'm delusional but I don't think so.

I was thinking that one thing that really helped motivate me during my first 12 weeks of training is I had a few "haters" that were telling me I would never be able to dunk at age 39. It made me mad! But, it also drove me. And I worked harder because of it. Honestly, I kind of miss it. Strange but true.

So instead of asking for some haters to provide some additional motivation, I'm wondering if anyone out there reading this blog would like to have a wager of some kind? Like first person to do X (for me it would be dunk 2 hands and for you it could be dunk for the first time or whatever) gets something cool. Doesn't have to be expensive. Maybe its a pair of Nike Elite socks or whatever. I just love to compete and might be fun to have a little extra bet to go along with our training.

Any takers? Come on. It will be fun!

While your thinking about it, I will leave you with one of my favorite new dunk vids. Enjoy!

  1. Hey Man - Been following you for awhile and have been on my own journey as well. Similar position to you - worked hard for a few months and have been able to get some basic dunks down, but wan to continue to progress. I was thinking of challenging you awhile ago to get a friendly competition going for both our benefits. So count me in. Here are my stats, Age 31, Height 5'11", Reach 91", stvj 29" running vj 34". Only dunk cleanly completed to date one hand, one legged jump. Let me know. Here's one video of my dunking.

    1. Wow! Awesome! Thanks, Aaron! Nice dunk too!

So are we both racing to dunk 2 hands? What should the wager be? This will be fun!

    2. Yeah I think 2 hands for both is fair. I'm probably a good 4 inches from doing that. I'm good with the wager of socks or shorts as well - just need the competition for the extra push. How should we keep each other accountable? Maybe a weekly check-in or weekly video? We need to get the winning dunk on video as well right? Let me know.

    3. sounds great! how about we compete for a pair of nike elite socks? i just started wearing them after wearing low cut socks for years and really like them.

yes - winning 2 hand dunk must be on video and of course the rim has to be 10 feet.

do you have a blog? we could each post progress on our blog each week? or we could do a video each week? i'm up for whatever.

    4. Been considering the blog idea, but haven't made the plunge. If I don't go that route I can post video links to your blog each week. Best of luck. Slow training week for me, plan to fire it back up next week. Just got the VJB 2.0 and planning on following that.

    5. Hey cool! I've been curious about VJB. I've read alot of Kelly Baggett's articles. Definitely knows his stuff. Keep me posted!

  2. Grats on finishing again and working hard. I would take you up on your offer by wagering I could dunk 1 handed before you get it with two, but I just feel like I have so far to go and I don't know where you stand on your goal. I still think I need 6" just to get on down.

What are your plans for training now that the Jump manual is over?

    1. Your pretty close to grabbing with 1 hand right? If you increased 6 inches, you would be dunking easy. On a lob or a ball you can palm, you could probably dunk with 4 more inches.

For training, I'm just going to repeat the Jump Manual again.

    2. I think the rim on the video on my blog is a couple inches low. I need to measure it. I tested at the AF Golds and I was only able to get my fingertips over the rim. Which seems to match my vertec more accurately. So I think I'm still a ways more off then I thought.

    3. it's crazy how many rims are not regulation height (too high or too low). very common.

just keep training and soon it won't matter! :-)

    4. Yeah, just tested on that same rime and measured it. It's only 9'10". Lame... Made me think I was actually getting close. Oh well... I have a long, long ways to go still.

      now...who are you?

    2. haha, just a long-time lurker.

I'm definitely down to bet a pair of nike shorts or socks on a dunk bet. I played a little yesterday and I got a few inches above the rim. So one-handed dunk vs. two-handed? I'll try to get video sometime this week.

      just started a blog: dunkbot.blogspot.com

    3. Sweet! Just checked out your blog and will be following your progress.

Sounds great on our wager -- race to 1 hand vs 2 hand dunk. How about we compete for Nike Elite socks?

  4. Elite socks it is! I guess we can have the other commenters decide on whether the dunk qualifies, especially cuz i used to be the master of tossing the ball in/pulling down on the rim to make it look like a dunk.

I think we should start an "Over 30, Wannabe Dunkers" support group! Any takers?
