Final week of training for this 12 week phase + couple of dunks

I’m finishing up my last week of this phase of training. Just one more workout and I get to take 2 weeks off! But, that doesn’t mean I will just be sitting around doing nothing. I plan to play hoops, do a few light exercises, and do some dunk sessions. I am really excited to see how I’m jumping once my legs are completely (or almost completely) fresh.

Here’s a couple of dunks I got this morning between pick-up games. Not my best jumps but not too shabby.

I’m actually most excited about how close I am to hanging on the rim off my no-step vert. I almost got that today. That will be a key milestone in my progress and expect that to happen in the next couple of weeks as well.

Keep training guys! It’s worth it!

  1. looking great! I think I get up higher just by looking at the clip, but I can't dunk lol my head touches the 2-3inches of the net, I guess I need to get my timing right. I can't wait to see your video with fully recovered legs :)

    1. have you done any practice dunking on low rims? that might help you a ton.

my no-step jump is really improving but haven't seen the full impact yet off the run. i think there is another 3-4 inches when my legs are recovered and my technique improves a bit. that should be enough for a 2 hander.

  2. Now I'm motivated. It's good to know I'm not the only person over 30 trying to dunk. I have tried the jump manual but started the flytright program by Brandon Todd. I noticed you said you "tweaked" the jump manual, how so?

    1. the first 12 weeks of the jump manual, i did the program exactly as outlined and i would recommend anyone else to do the same.

i took a little break and then repeated the jump manual a few times. you start to figure out what works best for your body. everyone is different. i needed to get a lot stronger (still do) and so i try and focus on that. other people are more naturally strong but are not as quick or explosive and so need to focus a little more on that. so...you just have to figure out what will help you the most. we also have different jumping styles...i used to jump higher off 1 foot (when i was younger)...and now i jump higher off 2 feet at least more consistently. every once in a while i will have a good jumping day off 1 foot but those are kind of rare.

  3. My son is impressed that an old guy like you can still get up and dunk the ball. My wife says that seeing you dunk should still give me hope...and that your gym looks exactly like our gym (I think I've commented on that before). I don't know, though...my legs are becoming more like jelly with each passing month.

  5. Hey man! Been a while. Not sure if you remember me, but I thought I'd check back in on you. I got deployed this past year, so that's been a big change with me. Glad to see you're still training hard and seeing gains. That's awesome.

    1. Of course I remember you Joe! I have checked your blog from time to time and hadn't seen any updates in a long time and wondered what happened to you! Hope all is well with you.
